While almost everyone knows their shoe size by heart, few people know the width of their feet. When it comes to finding the right shoe, not only the length matters, but also the width of your foot. We use four categories for our hiking shoes: narrow, standard (or medium), wide and extra wide.
Narrow feet are relatively common. According to studies, even 30 per cent of all women have a narrow foot. Women with narrow feet will notice that they have extra space on both sides of the shoe. To improve the fit, narrow shoes are a few millimetres narrower than medium-width shoes. Contrary to what you might think, hiking shoes that are too wide can cause similar complaints as shoes that are too small. Shoes that are too big or too wide for your feet can cause problems such as blisters, corns, black toenails and calluses.
